Details : Group Captain K Prem Kumar (21241) Flying (Pilot)was commissioned in the Indian Air Force as a Pilot in the Flying branch on 15 June 91. He is a 'Qualified Flying Instructor', 'Instrument Rating Instructor and Examiner' and alumni of the Defence Services Staff College. The officer took over command of a MiG-27 DASH 2 Squadron (Sqn) on 15 Sep 08. The Sqn, under his command, completed its upgradation to the MiG-27 Dash 2 aircraft in Dec 08. It was due to his foresight, methodical approach and documentation that many issues related to the 'Final Operation Clearance Implementation' (FOCD) of the MiG-27 Upgrade came to the fore. As a result, three phases of FOC implementation trials were instituted to resolve those issues. Based on the recommendations in the service paper written by the officer, certain modifications and changes were also incorporated to improve the features on the Upgrade aircraft thus enhancing its ergonomics and operational employability. He was also instrumental in operationalising the Laser Designation Pod on the MiG-27 Upgrade and formulating various briefing guides and SOPs for the fleet. His immense contribution towards making the Upgrade fleet fully operational is indeed praiseworthy. It was under his able leadership that the Sqn was recommended by Command HQ for Unit Citation. The officer's administrative skills were commended by dignitaries during various visits to the Sqn and the Station. Despite various limitations, he had, with his characteristic initiative and drive, marshaled his Sqn resources effectively to win the maximum number of trophies in the Gunnery Meet 2009-10. He also led from the front during the unit's inspection by the Directorate of Air Staff Inspection (DASl) achieving exceptional scores in all range strikes. The Sqn was adjudged 'Average Plus' by DASI with no observations to be actioned by the unit. The Squadron's performance in AEB was also commendable. It goes to his credit that the operational performance of the Sqn remained unaffected despite frequent turnover of the aircrew during his tenure. He also achieved the commendable feat of 4000 hrs of total flying during his tenure as the Commanding Officer. A committed Air Warrior, Gp Capt K Prem Kumar displayed total dedication and a very high degree of professionalism and believed in leading by personal example. Despite the change in aircraft type and numerous commitments, the unit has maintained an excellent flight safety record by avoiding any accident or incident attributable to human error. For exceptional devotion to duty, Hon'ble President is pleased to award Vayu Sena Medal (Devotion to Duty)' to Group Captain K Prem Kumar.

Details : Group Captain Krishnaswamy Premkumar, VM (21241) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force as a pilot in the flying branch on 15 Jun 1991. He is a Qualified Flying Instructor, Instrument Rating Instructor and Examiner, Alumni and Directing Staff of the Defence Services Staff College. The officer has flown over 4000 hours on various aircraft. He has held important command and staff appointments including command of a fighter squadron and Station Commander of an Air Defence Direction Centre. He is presently posted as the Defence Adviser at Abu Dhabi, UAE. As the first Defence Advisor at Abu Dhabi, the officer was responsible for establishing the Defence Wing in UAE. This he did in the shortest time with limited staff and resources. In the last two years, the officer has displayed exemplary skill at enhancing defence cooperation with various military and government organizations of the host country. This was amply evident by the successful conduct of numerous high level visits, interactions and staging of air and naval assets through UAE, often overlapping with each other. The officer, as a leader, possesses remarkable man management and networking skills. These came to the fore during the Yemen crisis in March 2015. Single handedly, the officer managed the task of air evacuation of more than 4000 Indian nationals. In doing so, he had the task of coordinating air effort, locating Indian spread through the length and breadth of Yemen, getting them safely to the airport, motivating inexperienced staff and subordinates, all the while working in an unfamiliar environment. Destitute nationals and vulnerable groups like hospital nurses were evacuated safely only due to the management skills and leadership displayed by the officer. For exemplary professionalism, dedication to duty, exceptional leadership in a crisis situation and distinguished service of a high order Hon'ble President is pleased to award Vishisht Seva Medal to Group Captain Krishnaswamy Premkumar, VM.
