Details : Flight Lieutenant Tapan Kapoor (31602) Aeronautical Engineering (Mechanical) was on the posted strength of a Mi-17 V5 Helicopter unit since 07 Jan 2013. On 25 Jun 2013. Flight Lieutenant Tapan Kapoor volunteered to proceed on Relief Rescue Operations towards Kedarnath to rescue stranded civilians from Kedarnath as a part of the Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) Missions that were undertaken in the aftermath of the disaster which occurred in Uttarakhand. The task involved moving Relief Teams of Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) from Guptkashi to Kedarnath. The presence of inclement weather and poor light conditions in the tricky hill terrain of the valley made the task extremely demanding and was delaying the operations. He knew fully well that the helicopter would be operating at the limits of its capabilities. Rather than abandoning the mission. Flight Lieutenant Tapan motivated all the team members and kept them primed for the task at hand. He realized that the small window of opportunity provided by the adverse weather would keep the crew tied to the helicopter which would require a close coordination with the Relief Teams. Rising to the occasion, he ensured that the required close coordination between the crew members and Relief Teams was effectively maintained, which in turn synergized the relief efforts. The Relief Teams were then safely transported to Kedarnath. The helicopter took off from Kedarnath with the Relief Teams. ready to make another shuttle at the earliest. However, the weather conditions on the return leg deteriorated at a rapid rate and the aircraft crashed killing all its occupants. With an indomitable spirit and disregard for personal safety, Flight Lieutenant Tapan displayed grit and determination of a true Air Warrior. In spite of no previous experience. he handled the task with utmost professionalism and courage. In carrying out these high risk missions in keeping with the highest traditions of the Indian Air Force of leading from the front, Flight Lieutenant Tapan displayed exceptional courage and valour. For this act of exceptional bravery and valour which finally lead to the supreme sacrifice. lion'ble President is pleased to award Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry), posthumously to Flight Lieutenant Tapan Kapoor.
