Plans, Air HQDate Raised : 1970-06-12 In 1970, Air Headquarters introduced the designation of Assistant Chief of Air Staff (ACAS) at the rank of Air Vice Marshal. This created an intermediary managerial layer between the Principal Staff Officer (PSO), typically an Air Marshal, and the numerous Directorates managed by Air Commodores and Group Captains. Six ACAS positions were initially established, with ACAS (Plans) being one of them.
The role of ACAS (Plans) involved overseeing the operations of the Directorates of Policy & Plans, Projects, Financial Planning, and Air Staff Requirements. Prior to this reform, each of these activities, except for Plans itself, operated as a Deputy Directorate and were upgraded to Directorates in 1970. ACAS (Plans) reports to the PSO in charge of overall planning for the IAF. At the time, this was the Vice Chief of Air Staff (VCAS), now known as the Deputy Chief of Air Staff (DCAS).
