Details : Wing Commander Pawan Kumar (20111) Flying (Pilot) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force as a Pilot in the Flying Branch on 14 Jun 1989. He has been the Commanding Officer of a Jaguar Squadron (Sqn) since 19 Jun 06 which is the only maritime strike Sqn of the Indian Air Force. The Officer has 2955 hours of accident free flying of which nearly 2700 hours are on operational aircraft. On assuming the command, he was entrusted with the task of conducting international exercise 'Exercise SINDEX' in Singapore in Dec 2006. Starting. with a limited number of experienced pilots, engineers and technicians, he led his team with personal example and the Sqn performed exceptionally well, in the said exercise winning appreciations from the Republic of Singapore Air Force. He was also entrusted the task of operationalisation of Airborne Fire Control Radar on Maritime Jaguars. Successful completion of this task enabled the Sqn to take part in another international exercise 'Exercise Malabar' in September 2007 again winning praise and honours for the Indian Air Force. The officer with his clear and objective thought process as well as meticulous planning ensured that the Sqn builds up on its operational status. This enabled the Sqn to win appreciation from all quarters. The Sqn was adjudged the 'Best Fighter Sqn of HQ South Western Air Command (SWAC)for 2007 -2008'. Also, due to his thorough involvement, Sqn was adjudged the 'Best Fighter Sqn in Exercise Eklavaya in SWAC for 2007-2008'. The Sqn was tasked to move, permanently from Air Force Station Pune to Air Force Station Jamnagar. Under his able guidance, the Sqn having operated continuously for 56 years at Pune, this move was completed successfully and the Sqn became operational at its new location within a month. For exceptional devotion to duty, Hon'ble President is pleased to award 'Vayu Sena Medal' to Wing Commander Pawan Kumar.
